Built For The Future

Clock in. Build something that lasts. Hand it over.

In under two hours, students become a temporary craft crew. Pre-staged kits. Real tools under supervision. One durable deliverable for their school — finished, checked, and handed over before the period ends. Not a trades fair. A mission.

Why This FieldTrip Matters

Most kids never get to finish something real at school — something that will still be there next year. Built For The Future is built for that gap: a short, intense crew experience where craftsmanship is the point, not a slideshow about careers.

In under two hours they learn what “good enough” vs “built to last” feels like in their hands — measure, assemble, finish, inspect — then leave a durable piece behind for the campus.

Show up ready

Clock in, get a crew role, learn the safety rules — then own your station on the kit.

Build to last

Every step is judged by finish quality: square joints, tight fasteners, clean edges.

One mission

No rotating carnival of demos. One deliverable. One punch list. Done before the bell.

Pride in the finish

Students sign off on their work and hand it to the school — proof they built something real.

Adults stage; kids finish

Kits are pre-cut and staged so the student window stays under two hours.

Respect the craft

Mentors model how tradespeople talk about standards, tools, and work that holds up.

The Mission

Your crew gets one kit and one job: finish a durable piece for the campus before time is up. Materials are pre-cut and labeled. Mentors coach. Students measure, assemble, finish, and pass a quick quality check — then hand the work to the school.

  • Pre-staged kits arrive ready so the clock stays under two hours
  • Crews of 6–8 with clear roles (measure, assemble, finish, QC)
  • Supervised use of age-appropriate tools and PPE
  • A punch list that has to be cleared before handover
  • A finished artifact the school keeps — not a take-home craft that falls apart

Timed Run of Show (~100 minutes)

Every minute is budgeted. Mentors keep crews on the punch list so the build finishes inside the window.

  1. 0–10 min

    Clock-in & safety

Crew roles, PPE, tool rules, and the mission board for today’s kit.

  2. 10–20 min

    Craft standards + kit walkthrough

Why things fail vs last. Walk the parts, fasteners, and finish criteria before anyone builds.

  3. 20–80 min

    Build / assemble / finish

Core block: crews work the kit under pro supervision — measure, assemble, sand, fasten, clean up.

  4. 80–90 min

    Punch list & quality check

Mentors inspect against the standards card. Fix what’s loose, crooked, or unfinished.

  5. 90–100 min

    Handover + reflection

Quick handover to the school, then a 60-second reflection: what does “built for the future” mean for you?

Craft Mentors on the Floor

Working tradespeople and skilled facilitators coach crews through standards — not lectures. They keep the clock honest, the tools safe, and the finish worthy of leaving behind.

  • Live coaching on measurement, fastening, and finishing
  • Safety culture that feels like a real jobsite, scaled for grades 6–9
  • Honest talk about pride in work — without a full career-panel day
  • Adult pre-staging so students spend their minutes building, not waiting

Presented by Carhartt

Carhartt stands for people who show up ready and do work that lasts. As title sponsor, Carhartt helps underwrite and co-create Built For The Future around craftsmanship, safety, and pride in a finished job — in a format schools can actually schedule: under two hours.

Gear can support safety, identity, and pride where appropriate. Cash underwriting for kits, mentors, staging, and school coordination remains the priority — this is not a product-donation FieldTrip.

FAQ

How is this different from Build The Future?

Build The Future is a longer skilled-trades exploration day — rotating stations and career pathways. Built For The Future is a separate under-2-hour crew mission: one kit, one lasting deliverable, one handover. Related spirit; different FieldTrip.

Can you really finish something lasting in under two hours?

Yes — because adults pre-cut and stage kits before students arrive. Students assemble, finish, and QC. The menu only includes projects that clear the clock with that pre-work.

What grades is this for?

Grades 6–9, with crew sizes and tools scaled for age and campus space.

Is this a Carhartt product giveaway?

No. Title sponsorship prioritizes cash underwriting and co-creation. Gear is optional and secondary.

How many students per visit?

Typically 24–48 students in crews of 6–8, depending on space, mentors, and which kit the school chooses.
